Program

Join us for a trip down memory lane when ladies of the evening called downtown home, and sailors - even politicians -prowled the streets of the Stingaree in search of a good time. Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation staff and volunteers will re-create life in San Diego's Stingaree through an unique presentation in which costumed living people portray many of the characters of the Victorian era. You may meet San Diego's leading madam of the era, Ida Bailey, and hear of the escapades of Madam Coara, a retired fortune teller turned professional, and her unusual marketing techniques to make a living. You'll hear about the rise of the suffragette movement in San Diego in the early 1900's which gave way to the closing of the Stingaree in 1912. This entertaining lecture-turned-show will
acquaint you with the dark side of downtown, and this enlightening and amusing narrated experience will delight both the casual history observer and the most ardent of history enthusiasts.
